The Struggles of Internal Chorea: Impact on Digestion and Swallowing

Internal chorea, a movement disorder characterized by involuntary, unpredictable muscle movements, presents unique challenges for those affected—particularly when it comes to eating and digestion. While the most visible symptoms involve limb, trunk, and facial movements, chorea can also disrupt the delicate coordination required for effective chewing, swallowing, and digestion.

Difficulties with Chewing and Moving Food

Internal chorea often causes involuntary movements of the jaw, tongue, and facial muscles. This can make it difficult to keep food in the mouth and chew efficiently. The unpredictable muscle contractions may cause food to spill from the mouth or become lodged in the cheeks, leading to frustration and embarrassment during meals. This combination and difficulty can also result in not swallowing safely.

Challenges with Swallowing

Swallowing, a complex process involving precise timing of muscle contractions, can be severely affected. Individuals with internal chorea may experience dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), increasing the risk of choking or aspiration (food entering the airway). This not only makes eating stressful but can also lead to respiratory complications.

Digestive Discomfort

Beyond the mouth and throat, involuntary movements can interfere with the normal passage of food through the digestive tract. This may result in irregular bowel movements, discomfort, or even malnutrition if eating becomes too challenging.

Coping Strategies

Living with internal chorea means navigating daily struggles that go far beyond movement. For many, the simple act of eating becomes a significant challenge, impacting both physical health and emotional well-being. Managing these symptoms often requires support from speech and occupational therapists, specialized diets, and adaptive utensils. Careful meal planning and patience are essential to maintain proper nutrition and quality of life. There are medications available to help treat the symptoms of Huntington’s disease-related chorea. Please speak with your healthcare team to see if this is an appropriate introduction for you or your loved ones' care.
